Esteemed Fire Philosophers🔥,
We are very much looking forward to reading Sun House with you and are grateful for your generosity in supporting our writing.
As we read this book together, I encourage all participants to notice the life philosophies you encounter along the way, passages that ring true, passages that ring false, perhaps with a few queries operating in the background as you read:
How would Nietzsche respond to this text?
Are there any Zen/Buddhist principles in the narrative, and if so, how accurate and nuanced are they?
What other core philosophies do you encounter and how do they resonate?
And most broadly and generally, what does the book offer us in terms of giving style to our lives?
Book Club journeys, I’ve learned, are less about enjoying the book as entertainment and more about finding ways in which our emergent mutual conversation brings a more thoughtful and heartfelt response out of all of us.
Not yet having read it myself, I’m intrigued by the ecstatic praise it has received, and the less than enthusiastic reviews that did not spare the rod. Nietzsche himself loved writing in a polemical style that contradicted that which was deemed common sense, and often himself. If there are contradictions here, let’s see if they lead to the paradoxical, which are often true, or the merely confused.
Below is the provisional schedule and the zoom link for our meeting.
